How Shay made her Dad’s 60th birthday party the best ever

While attending a friend’s wedding at Mais Oui Villa in 2020 just before the COVID pandemic hit, Mr. Smith recalls remarking that the villa was a great place for events.

Little did he know that Mais Oui would become the place to celebrate his own 60th birthday in Jamaica.

His daughter, Shay, was determined to make it ultra special and asked for a surprise that would knock her Dad’s socks off! The staff at Mais Oui were happy to oblige.

All 15 guests arrived on a Sunday in September 2021 to help Mr. Smith celebrate his birthday in Jamaica and stayed the entire week.

Given his group’s love of dominos, there was a table set up for them to play every day.

They loved fresh coconut water and vodka and that was their drink of the day. The butler and his assistant kept the drinks flowing.

Every day, there was a different setup for meals which built the excitement. The talents of the chef shone brightly. Being good cooks themselves, they appreciated her efforts and showered her with praise lavishly.

The housekeepers kept the place spotless so the guests never had to lift a finger.

The big day was Saturday.

The day started off with nine of the 15 guests having spa treatments.

Mr. Smith had indicated that he wanted a special dinner the Saturday night, so he expected that; but, he had no idea what was in store for him.

Shay had chosen a color theme using white, black, and gold.

Initially, we thought of doing the setup on the roof deck with the setting sun as a backdrop. But when we considered the highlight of the evening, we had other ideas so we relocated to the villa gardens.

Solar-powered fire torches lined the entrance to the garden to set the tone for the evening. When the evening began, guests were escorted to the seating area.

The seating area was set up beside the waterfall in the gardens. The buffet spread was set up under the trellis on the adjacent patio.

Being Jamaican, the Smiths wanted to honor their heritage with the birthday meal.

The menu for the evening featured garden salad with homemade dressing, pasta salad, rice and peas, steamed white rice, reggae vegetables, fried chicken, curried goat, and brown stewed fish.

Shay made the two-tiered cake which was decorated with white fondant.

Champagne toasts with best wishes followed.

Mr. Smith gave a very moving thank you response to his guests. On top of it all, he graciously thanked each staff personally, highlighting them as a team and as individuals.

The piece de resistance of the evening was the fire dancer show put on by an incredibly talented, internationally recognized artiste, Brian.

The guests were mesmerized.

At the end of the event, there weren’t enough words to convey their excitement and joy.

And yes, the birthday mister was surprised!

Guests were sad to leave after breakfast on Sunday morning with many planning their return.
