Why We Chose Christopher’s Restaurant

For Darrell‘s birthday, we wanted to go out for a nice dinner. We chose Christopher‘s restaurant in Ocho Rios, one of the top-rated spots in town.

To get there, you turn onto a small, almost hidden road right beside Rapid True Value Hardware. It’s a dark, narrow, winding, and bumpy road — but it feels like a little adventure, almost as if you’re chasing a hidden gem at the end of a rainbow.

The restaurant is located on the property of Hermosa Cove Resorts, a beautiful boutique hotel filled with artistic touches (which is honestly an understatement).

Important: Reservations Are Required

Reservations are absolutely required.

Do not show up and expect to be allowed on the property by security — you won’t be. It’s strictly by reservation-only.

The restaurant is very small and also serves guests who are staying at Hermosa Cove, so they manage their space carefully.

I suspect this limited size is one of the main reasons they enforce the reservation policy so strictly.

First Impressions: Setting and Atmosphere

Christopher’s restaurant overlooks the sea and offers a stunning view.

Two gazebos sit right at the water’s edge, each connected by a little path. If you want to dine in one of these gazebos, you must specifically request it when making your reservation. There’s an additional $50 charge, and each gazebo seats up to four people.

The atmosphere is peaceful and elegant, with light background music that was just perfect—not too loud, which can be a rare find in Jamaica.

Drinks and Menu at Christopher’s Restaurant

They have an extensive beverage menu—cocktails, martinis, margaritas, beer, rum, vodka, tequila, gin, cognac, whiskey, scotch—you name it.

Since we don’t drink alcohol, we chose one of the two virgin drink options. I had the Hermosa Cooler, a mix of orange juice, pineapple juice, Ting (Jamaica’s award-winning grapefruit soda), and grenadine. It was refreshing and cost US$8.

The food menu itself was simple, which I appreciated. Sometimes restaurants with giant menus can’t deliver even half of what’s listed.

Here, they had a small but thoughtfully curated selection, including two vegan dishes: a chickpea coconut curry and a vegetable ratatouille.

What We Ordered: Appetizers and Main Course

For appetizers, we ordered the Curried Goat Ravioli (US$17) and the Fried Calamari.

• The curried goat ravioli was tender, flavorful, and a little spicy—delicious!

• The calamari was just okay. (Honestly, Bettino’s still holds the title for the best calamari we’ve had so far.)

For the main course:

• I had the local catch of the day, a snapper fillet served with vegetables and bammy (a traditional Jamaican cassava flatbread).

• Darrell chose the jerk lobster, which came with veggies and potato croquettes.

Both dishes were fresh and well-prepared. It’s clear the kitchen takes pride in showcasing local flavors.

Catch of the day and Lobster are at market prices, but overall for the quality of the food, the service, and the ambience, the final bill was much less than we had anticipated.

A Special Touch for a Special Occasion

They surprised Darrell with a slice of cake and a candle for his birthday — a thoughtful and memorable touch.

At the end of the meal, the chef, Chef Foster, came out to personally greet guests and gather feedback. It was great to meet him and hear a little about his journey — he’s been at Christopher’s for just a few months but already making his mark.
